3. Antec 900 Case Mod

Hi everyone! I know it's been a while since I've posted, but my work has been pretty crazy this summer and I've also done quite a bit of travel. For the last few months, either I've been either working my a$$ off at home, at work, getting ready to go on a trip, or just getting back from a trip. I'm going away AGAIN this weekend with my GF for my b-day (# 47) to New Hampshire, then I'm going back to TX a few weeks after that. Despite all the craziness, I did find the time to do my FIRST case mod on an Antec 900. The reason I decided to do it was that I wanted to give my son, warspitejr, a unique gift from me that I knew he would enjoy for some time to come. The Antec 900 is a well-established case and it has been around for some years now. It was my first "performance" PC case and when it first came out it was one of the best out there, especially at its price point. I liked it so much that, when my son became old enough to have a gaming rig of his own, I built his PC around the Antec 900 as well. Well, time and tech have advanced since then, and innovations have emerged that surely make the 900 show its years. Those issues aside, I still saw that with a little time, money, creativity, and some elbow grease; I could do a PC case mod for my son that he would be proud of and fill his gaming needs for at least the next few years. With that, here we go. Here's what I started out with... your basic Antec 900. Nothing to write home about, and this case's tight confines (especially with long video cards) make cable management an absolute bizitch. For those of you who own an Antec 900 (or know someone who does), you know what I'm talking about. (yeah, there was a time when I thought, "Hey, these cables are looking good!) I will spare you the gorry details of my thought processes and the things I had to consider when implementing the changes, but suffice it to say that some trial and error was involved, as well as some research. One tip I thought was really cool that I can take NO credit for was to flip the power supply upside down so that the intake fan is on the bottom and the cables are at the back of the case (note the stock power supply cable arrangement in the pic above... yuck!). I learned from both owning and reseaching my Silverstone Raven case that having positive air pressure inside the case can both aid cooling and keep dust out. All that is needed is to pump more filtered air into the case than you pump out, thus creating positive pressure inside the case. To that end, I have four 120mm intake fans and one 200mm exaust fan at the top of the case. We'll see if that does it or not. Color-wise, I was inspired by Crysis and its black-gray color scheme. I thought it looked pretty neat, was neutral (meaning it would coordate well with a variety of different colored PC components), and forgiving (at least in the mistake department). Enough of the thought piece, on to the pics! Here's the front view, showing how the gray and black go together. Although it can't be seen with the case put together, I modified the gray grills to facilitate the easy drop-in of a air filters for the two 120mm fans at the front of the case. To clean the filters, you need only loosen two thumbscrews and slide the cages out about 1/2". Sweet! Here's a view of the bottom of the case, where you can see the blow holes I made for the power supply's 140mm fan and an additional 120mm intake fan. The air filters are held on by magnets and can be easily removed for cleaning or they can be vacuumed in place (with a brush attachment). Ease of maintenance was one of things I tried to design in. I'd rather be gaming than cleaning any day!! You can also see the custom rubber feet I installed to lift the case a little bit higher to facilitate air flow to the intake fans. Here's a view into the case. Its original metal finish was so 1990s and it just had to go. I scuffed up the interior with steel wool and spray painted it with Krylon's "Flat Black". The paint did not stick as well as I hoped, but it still looks good. For those of you considering a project like this, I recommend using primer before applying the color of your choice. As far as ventilation goes, since the GPU exhausts primarily to the outside and the CPU exhausts straight into the overhead fan, I felt that the ventilation scheme was in pretty good shape. Note the empty drive bays. I kept warspitejr's rig simple by opening up those bays for maximum air flow by using brackets to mount his two 3.5" in HDDs into the 5.25" bays. Getting the power supply cables behind the mobo plate and consolidating the drives into a single bay did wonders for cable management. I'm very pleased with how clean things look inside the case now. Definitely leaps and bounds better than my "before" photo. Putting all three drives into a single bay simplified cable management while increasing air flow within the case. If you have empy 5.25" drive bays, I suggest giving it some thought, especially if doing so will clear the space in front of your intake fans. Yeah, I'm digging the case's flat black interior MUCH better than the old metal finish. Here's a view of the 120mm fan I reversed to pull additional cooling air into the case. Although I didn't know it at the time, the power supply had a pretty cool emblem on its side that is right side up when the power supply is installed upside down (as it is now). I wonder who thought that one up? Anyway, it was a nice win for me and definitely helps the interior of the case look its best. Here's a view of the back of the case. Again, the flat black paint does wonders. I installed a Cooler Master intake filter for the rear 120mm intake fan. Just a quick vacuuming with the brush attachment will keep this filter clean. Here's a nice three-quarter view that shows the paint job I did on the grills. It turned out VERY nice indeed! Well, that about does it for this posting. I had a lot of fun doing this case mod and I was really pleased with how well it turned out, especially considering it was my first one. Although I by no means consider myself an expert, I did learn a few things and I would be glad to answer any questions you might have. war
