We all know Sony Online Entertainment as the partner game company with Sony Corporation, creator of games like Everquest, DC Universe Online, Payday, Planetside 2, and most recently, H1Z1. However, as of the beginning of this month Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) no longer exists. In its place is a new brand and new name, Daybreak Game Company LLC.
On February 2nd 2015 SOE and many of its top developers announced that they had been purchased by the parent company Columbus Nova, a New York based investment company. This means that Daybreak, formerly SOE, is now completely independent of Sony Corporation. What does this mean? Daybreak is no longer contracted to create games only for Sony Game Platforms. Planetside 2 has recently released on the Play Station 4, and many hope to see some of their favorite Daybreak games on Xbox and mobile platforms.
“Sony Online Entertainment, newly rebranded as Daybreak, is a great addition to our existing portfolio of technology, media and entertainment focused companies. We see tremendous opportunities for growth with the expansion of the company’s game portfolio through multi-platform offerings as well as an exciting portfolio of new quality games coming up, including the recently launched H1Z1 and the highly anticipated EverQuest Next to be released in the near future"
- John Epstein (Senior Partner of Columbus Nova)
“We are excited to join Columbus Nova’s impressive roster of companies. They have a proven track record in similar and related industries and we are eager to move forward to see how we can push the boundaries of online gaming. We will continue to focus on delivering exceptional games to players around the world, as well as bringing our portfolio to new platforms, fully embracing the multi-platform world in which we all live.”
- John Smedley (President of Daybreak Game Company LLC)
So what does this mean for us players? Daybreak has promised "business as usual." It was no secret that SOE struggled as a company for some time, perhaps the changes with a new parent company, name, and staff team will produce even better games and communities than those that we have experienced from SOE in the past sixteen years.
