Over the past 2 years there has been a lot of growth with discord. Even with those who think that Discord isn't a viable option for any group, they've still managed to reach over 25 million users on Discord. (Yes I was one of those who thought it wasn't a viable option for a while) And while there are some things that seem to take forever for them to get updated, it truly does appear that they do care about the users and providing a great experience for them in the long run.
That continues here with the most recent update that Discord has posted regarding the safety of it's users. Things that have been previously implemented include:
- IP Location Lock
- Two-Factor Authentication
- Streamer Mode
- File Warnings
- Virus Scanning
- Verification Levels
So now on top of all of those current security features they are now working on a bunch of other safety updates:
Safe Direct Messaging
Have you been worried about something that your friend or some random is sending you? Well now their 'robo-hamsters using fancy machine learning' will scan any images that are sent to you. Don't worry, if you trust your friends you can have it only scan messages from everyone else. Check out what it'll look like below.
You will find those options above under User Settings --> Privacy Tab
Global Privacy Settings for Direct Messages
Previously this was a setting that you had to change on a per server basis. But if you want to be able to have it set that only your friends can message you on any server you'll now have a one click global option. You'll still also be able to override the global setting on a per server basis if you choose.
Snoopy Link Filter
You're now going to get a new pop-up for when you get a direct message from non friends letting you know about masked links.
This is already in place for links in discord but they decided to bring it to DM's as well.
Now these next few updates are too good to not post exactly what was said in the Discord Updates so have a good laugh!
Enhanced (╯°□°）╯︵ ┻━┻ Verification Level
Table flip supreme.
This new optional enhanced verification level will require people in the server to have a verified phone number on their account to send messages (including DMs).
The bonus for this feature is that server bans will now ban baddies by phone number in addition to IP Address making their baddie lives even baddier.
To tackle the baddies at any time, all the time, we will be exposing the same fancy machine learning used in Safe Direct Messaging but in servers. Turning on Explicit Content Filtering will automatically detect and delete images and uploads deemed inappropriate.
By default, this will be off for all existing servers. To enable this, simply check the Explicit Content Filtering option in server settings.
Discord Partner servers will have this turned on automatically.
Previously, reporting abusive behavior through our normal support channels was cumbersome. We’re going to speed this up by adding a button (buttons OP) to messages on large servers (about 100 members or so) and non-friend DMs. This button will automatically flag content as inappropriate so our support team can identify and tackle it like a well muscled cheetah.
So as you can see, the fine folks at Discord are working on some great updates. And I'm sure there will be tweaks and updates to everything above but it's definitely a step in the right direction. Now if they can just provide a few more things for server admins since we're almost through Q1, that would be wonderful
