Tech applies to phones too, right?

Recommended Posts

I have an upgrade coming my way next month, and was browsing around online. I'm on AT&T and have a $140 limit, I was looking for an Android phone with 4G compatibility (I only upgrade every two years, and 3G is already on it's way out) and found the HTC Inspire for $99.99. It appears to have everything I want and nothing I don't, but I thought I'd ask around for opinions. I watch a lot of videos, so a nice screen and decent audio is a must. I don't text that often, so that's not really a factor. I like the WiFi hotspot capability, and it works out nicely because of my data plan.

Basically, it's got neat little bells and whistles and can't be beat for the price (it's new, not refurb), and it still has the basics I need. There are other phones that are cheaper but refurbished, like the HTC Aria, but it's not 4G compatible. The Motorola Atrix refurb is $99.99 and it's 4G and can use neat little docking pads and can be used with it's own tablet accessory, but that costs extra. The refurb warranties are only 90 days, so I don't want to take any chances. My current phone is a refurb and has lasted me 2 years, but I'd rather buy a new one.

Let me hear your suggestions.

im not joking look at Target mobile. Go into a store, i just upgraded my mom to an HTC Galaxy S (Captivate) for $19.99.. w. my TM discount we got 10% off and we had a red card which was an additional 5%.. (15% off) it came out around $18 (10% got rid of most of NYS Tax - 8.25%)... for a $500 phone.. Look at discounts and what not.. look online for deals..

the Atrix 4G is alright but i believe is a bit bogged down.. the latest HTC phone that came out which was "4G" (really only HSPA+).. TBH, HSPA+ isnt really anything to gloat about, and theres no phones out there that's Real 4G Capable yet on ATT.. (LTE)... If you want to wait another month or two, i betcha a LTE 4G phone will be announced for ATT... But thats only if you want ATT's LTE 4G..

HSPA+ is meh, its good, but and already spread out, theres just a bad phone line for it (if i went with an Android phone on ATT i'd get the Atrix tbh..)..

so if the top was To long:
either Wait for LTE Phones (this summer ATT's rolling LTE out)
or
Buy from a retailer for cheap phones

P.S... visit an ATT store, and just take an hour to "feel" around the phone.. you have 30 days to return it (as long as you dont damage it) and there's a certain % restocking fee.....
you never know with soo many OS' and several different UI's per Android (HTC Sense, MotoBlur, Samsungs iOS copycat.. iOS/BBOS/WebOS/WindowsPhone)

Out of the Phones.. HTC makes s olid phone.. but i'd recommend the Atrix 4G.. just the UI is better and Moto is more responsible.. i've read that there's talk of them unlocking the bootloader for easy jailbreaking the phone (rooting), also the Accessories that i've seen are kickass, and the device is solidly built.
(friends/family have both the Captivate[not HSPA+4G] and the Atrix)

UI's are preference

Yeah I think more companies who have Android phones will start allowing for easy access of getting rid of the bootloader for those who don't want it.

I think HTC has done that and I believe there will be more to follow.

Topic revival! Fedex dropped off my HTC Inspire "4G" (I put it in quotes to avoid a certain person ranting about how it's "NOT REALLY 4G". The greatest thing? My absolutely terrible town is located right between to towers, so I get all the fake-4G-goodness. Actually the best part is that I have an awesome phone, but you get the point. Maybe my phone doesn't seem that awesome to you, or compared to your phone? Consider this: the phone belongs to me. That instantly blows everything else out of the water.

Even after using iPhones, iPads, and my shitty old Samsung, this thing is like alien technology. I fucking love it.

BTW what are some good earbuds that don't make your ears feel like they're giving birth in reverse? This thing has boss sound (to match the video) and I can't exactly wear my freaksihly large gaming headset around, sooooo...

Also, I can't figure this thing out. I feel like my mom when she got her iPhone,, except those are user-friendly as fuck.

edit- I did manage to make a facebook post and accept a youtube friend request from dickwhistle/cumpuppy/anus, so at least there's that. I still can't figure out how to move my music i saved on my microsd card into the goddamned phone except for my Dad's individual ringtone (LSU chant of course)

my mom has that phone... the Battery fucking SUCKS on it.. just saying.......

and i dont like the launcher but that's customizable so its all good.. other than that the phone is pretty solid, a good build.. but bad battery..... Also no swipe ! :/

and yea its like 3.5G, but ATT only markets it 4G because they figured if TMobile can market their HSPA+ as 4G then ATT could, seeing how they've had HSPA+ Deployed a year before tMobile..
(I learned on my Atrix 4G that H+ means 4G lol.. I knew what E stood for and G but ya if ya dont:
E - Edge (2.5G)
G - 3G (3G)
H+ - 4G (3.5G)
LTE - 4G (4G)

Holy cock on a pornstars face this thing has so many uremovable apps it's unreal. I don't use flicker, can't remove it. That's just one out of at least a dozen others. Also, certain "free" apps come with ads at the bottom of the screen. What the shit? I see ther are lots of root apps available on the Android market, but I'm not touching them until I know wtf I'm doing.

Also, when I try to sync my phone to my pc (I followed all the troubleshooting steps), it still tells me I have to download Sync for my PC. It even gives me a link. When I go to the link, it's about the latest Sync updates for my phone, and has nothing to do with installing it on my PC. Am I missing something?

I am told by fellow android users that it just takes time to learn the ins and outs, since it's not as idiot-friendly as the iPhone. The ads I'm referring to aren't like ads on a PC, they're just little tabs at the bottom of the screen, so it's not like they're taking up a lot of space. My main complaint is that I don't want to have to root my phone just to get rid of shit I don't use. And the sync stuff. I did manage to move all my music to it, but the built-in music player requires headphones to work. WTF is that all about? There are other apps that allow me to listen, but I want to use it as a personal mp3 player, not a "HEY GUYS LISTEN TO MY MUSIC WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT" player.

As far as battery life goes, it's simply a matter of turning off features like Wi-Fi, GPS, and other things you don't use on a regular basis. My battery lasts quite a while.

Jiz, you only wish that's all you heard from android users :D How many complaints have you heard from me eh? lol

And Jockey what music app are you using? Because (testing it after reading this) I'm using the stock music app WITHOUT headphones.

And what program are you using to "Sync" your phone? I honestly don't do any of that syncing stuff besides moving programs to my phone to install, etc. . Don't really have a reason to 'sync' my phone to my computer.

95% of all free apps come with ads, how do you expect the developers to make money if they only have free apps? I have some free apps that don't have ads, but most of the time ads aren't a big deal. There are some cases where they are annoying beyond belief, and people do complain about them. . like Words With Friends, and Angry Birds when they moved their ad placement to the top right instead of bottom right, stuff like that. Most developers put them in a spot that is the least obstructive from what I've seen.

I hear the only way to save Android battery life is to turn off the phone completely :D

Ok many of you are complaining about battery life. On my fascinate I can get a good day of battery life. I charge it at night when im on the computer and then when the computer is off it will sit there idle and locked (not being charged) overnight until i pick it up for work or what ever the next morning. I give it fairly good use. Internet, music, games, texting out the ass, and other stuff taking pics and all that. I can say the battery life is fantastic. By night the battery on avg will be 50 percent and sometimes lower if I use the GPS Hud stuff for fun driving around. Overall I cant complain. But think about what we pocket every day....A micro computer, mine has a hummingbird processor at 1ghz which is lower NM then the Snap Dragon which means its a bit more efficient on power on top of that my Fascinate uses the Super AMOLED screen which just looks amazing!

Overall im happy with android, I have live widgets that update regularly for weather on the main screen I have short cut to apps, with total of 3 screens, screen 2 has a full calendar and the last one has a to do list controls for the GPS, Bluetooth, Mobile Data, Wifi, and Rotation, and then a few other use ful things. I dont have to dig around some stupid app to get that info. The only time I need an app is to play games or check email. And sure Android apps have ads sometimes, but if I remember so do Iphone apps and Ipod touch apps as well.

But im not gonna lie. I like the IPhone for what it is too. Its a neat device. Just beacuse I have android doesnt mean im completely blind to what Apple does, though im not an apple person. The windows phones have a nice UI I think and they are pretty decent too. But I like android. Each to his own. What works for one probably isnt as good for the other. In my mind the Android is the Linux of the phones. You can freely develop apps, has a large community behind it, and runs on many phones and that is something to credit on.

So for me its android.

Well if your looking for basic decent headphones

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MDR-E829V-Fontopia-Earbuds-Control/dp/B00005T3RC/ref=dp_cp_ob_e_title_1

I like these I had a set of these which I lost that did not have the built in volume control that I had for about 5 years. Great headphones for the price. If your looking for something higher quality beats me. Im not that crazy about headphones.

To move music on to the phone, plug the phone up to the comptuer via USB cord it came with and the phone should pick up the connection and will ask to be used as a mass storage device. Make a music folder if there isnt one and put the music in there. After your done go to the phone and detach the phone by hitting stop on the phone usb connection and then the media scanner will find your songs and add them to the library.

Thats how it works on mine anyway...(samsung Galaxy Fascinate)

dude I come from an iPhone... and let me tell you, Battery on my Atrix sucks horribly.. my moms HTC Inspire 4G or what ever, is worse.. my aunts, grandmothers, cousin and cousin-in-law.. ALL Battery sucks..

What i do with my phone..
sleeping - charging
- Alarm
- Drive to work - charging
- Pandora > on 50% of my shift (packing out on sales floor)
- Music App after for when i go into coolers/freezers
- Internet (15 minute break/45min break then 15 again)
- Texting every now and then during the work day..

By the end of my 8 hour shift > 15-25% battery life. Car ride home > Charging... i get a 50% charge on my way home so i avg 75ish when i get home...
- Wifi gets turned on
- internet usage up the ass (facebook/chrome/fml/and so forth)
- some mild apps

at the end of the day im charging my phone 2-3 times a day to keep it charged.. and when i chill with my friends its SO much worse.. but i use GPS b.c we drive around ALOT and i record and take a TON of pictures...

With my iPhone.. I would only charge it at night and it'd last the ENTIRE day.... not touching it my dads iPhone 3GS lasts him 3 days idle.. and 2 when he "uses" it. and he keeps wifi on... 24/7

Pandora is killer for battery life man! But I just got home from 7 to about 8 and the battery was sitting at 68 percent. I text a crap load internet, and I keep wifi off until i need it. My battery is great, but Im not as a heavy user as you. I have no issues with my phone.

Yeah, I don't use my phone nearly as much as Radar, and my battery lasts about two days before I get a "Battery is less than 25%, go to low power mode?" notification. One issue I noticed is that in low power mode the games get a bit wonky. The touches aren't accurate, and the pause menus come up at random. Maybe I just had some smudges on the screen or something, but I had just gotten out of the shower about 30 mins before so it's not like my hands were covered in neckbeard grease and cheetos dust. I played Stupid Zombies nearly all day though, so maybe that had something to do with it. Stupid Zombies is WAY more fun than Angry Birds. I still have a few more things I'd like to try out, but I spend most of my home time on my PC/watching TV, not using my phone, so it will be a slow process.

Turbo edit - the camera is sweet. 8MP, 720p progressive zoom and shit. Gonna film the shit out of my niece's 6th birthday next month.

I like Androids Slogon:

Droid does......
- not want to keep a charge
- not keep service where my iPhone once had service
- crashes alot
- overheats alot
- likes to give me "connection error" when ever i go to facebook's app
- lock up
- Snooze my Alarm WAY to easily
Want me to continue?

and yes, there's a reason i use it heavily.. Its the only reason i bought a smart phone.. Otherwise i'd have a feature phone. Why pay the extra cash for for a phone you dont even use? I know people who have smartphones, and then bitch about the bill but they "only text" with it.. WHY PAY the $$ to just text, when theres feature phones that do that shit.. (and this is why there's not tiered plans - b.c people dont use the data and want to pay less)

Lol ive had it lock up one me before but only for a few seconds because I had way to much memory being used up, I just got a task killer and that was the end of that. One in a blue moon an app will crash but it doesnt bother me that much. Though I will say this is my first real actual smart phone. Before this I was still rocking a flip phone ;)

I'm fucking loving my phone more and more every day. Fuck your iPhones in the ass. You know what really sucks though? My phone has about 3x the upload speed of my DSL, both of which are ATT. Cable over here isn't any better because the speeds available are the same and the system is old and sucks yet costs $10 more, so that isn't an option/solution. Anyway, back to the phones. Since I live in the boondocks, you wouldn't think I can receive "4G" coverage, but I do. Yes, yes, I know it isn't true "4G" as Verizon and ATT have basically changed the meaning of the term. Shut up and eat shit, assholes. I receive 4G in my area, so my uploads are (to me) crazy fast. Downloads are roughly the same speed, so it's kinda slow (compared to my land speed) on a big page, but noticably faster than 3G. But you know what's really awesome? I can run Flash. OOOOHHHHHHH. EAT SHIT AGAIN.

My apps don't crash, I don't drop calls, my battery life is well over one day of heavy use thanks to turning off GPS (don't use unless I need navigation), WiFi (used it for like 30 mins the whole month), and Bluetooth (don't use). I can turn off apps after I finish using them, saving memory and battery life. Basically, Every claim Radar makes goes down the shittiest toilet imaginable. Even Maybe he's just hearing complaints about BAD PHONES?! OR FROM STUPID PEOPLE?! OR BOTH?! IS IT POSSIBLE?! BUT THAT HAS NEVER, EVER, HAPPENED BEFORE, HOW COULD IT BE TRUE NOW?!

Hey you know what a VALID complaint is? My HTC radio app requires headphones. My regular speaker isn't very loud. High quality sound requires headphones. You know what this has to do with Android? FUCKING NOTHING. IT'S JUST MY PARTICULAR PHONE.

ANGRY POST FEEL THE RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE

edit - Wow, my old posts seem like they were made by somebody else. I have a complete handle on my phone now (obviously), and I love it more than ever.

Heard this, not gonna root until I feel like I need it. I'd say sometime within the next three months, but I'll probably do something stupid like try it the next time I have too many beers or some other confidence-booster and ruin my shit completely.
