An Introduction to Star Citizen

Recommended Posts

Interested in Star Citizen? Here is a decent collection of videos and preliminary information for new comers.

Imagine trailer:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJJ9TcGxhNY

DEMOS:

Actual game demos that were presented at game conferences. They have since been cleaned up a little for brevity but we saw them live.

Star Citizen Alpha 2.0

Squadron42 - Early Alpha Demo

Citizen Con 2015 - Main Star Citizen conference (2 hours)

GAMEPLAY:

My industrial hangar video, skip to ships you want to see, I get into almost all of them:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kFjCow_UHM

Arena Commander Racing

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAkkwc1eSew

Arena Commander Dog fighting vs AI. Note: energy barrier just exists in the AC module as it is just a sim, won't be a thing in the game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gT9OkGqP0CE

What now?

You have a couple of options.

  1. Wait. You can purchase the game for $60.00 when the game comes out.
  2. Get access to Alpha now by buying a package with Arena Commander Pass (starting at 45.00, get a referral code from another ADK member for extra goodies!)
  3. Come into TS and talk to us about what you want out of the game or comment on this thread so we can help with your choice. There is no need to buy an expensive ship unless you want to support development and want a sweet ship in your hangar for alpha. ALL ships will be obtainable in the game without the need for spending real money.
  4. 3 is really the best option. That and play AC with us as soon as possible! :D

Bonus Videos -- Commercials:

These are ship commercials that introduces ships with some personality. There isn't a commercial for every ship, yet.

People playing the original WC games is what got Star Citizen all the money. Anyone who played Wing Commander: Privateer knows exactly how awesome this kind of game can be :D

Well, admittedly I never played WC, but I DID play Freelancer and loved it, so on hearing that Chris was the guy behind that one, I backed the Kickstarter, and have been shoving money through my screen ever since lol.

Privateer was basically Freelancer in the WC universe. Chris knows how to make these kind of games and I guarantee nobody else would have been able to pull in this much money based on hopes and dreams.

If you have any doubts as to how much reputation and past projects influence crowd funding, just remember what happened to Transverse...

Am i the only one that gets chills when ever i watch the "imagine" trailer?

I don't know what is it, best its such a good trailer.

I knew the persistent universe was gonna be great, but how they transition from outer space into land terrain had me worried.

After seeing the Demo of the Persistent universe am sure it will work out just great.

That would been very funny to find zombies in Star Citizen.

@[member='Gritmos']... Pretty sure you are going to see something very much like those.  The Galaxy is a pretty big place, and they have a lot of stereotypes they want to lampoon.  :)

@[member='kraven'],

I am 56 years old.  Never played WC, or Freelancer nor had I any idea who Chris Roberts was.  I had no interest in investing any money because of his past games on truly antiquated technology, since there is no analogue to what could be done with what had been done.  Having spent a serious amount of time with Dev Creative Assembly, I can categorically say that this is true in just the last 10 years, not the last 25!

My interest in SC was based completely on what was being demonstrated in areas that press the envelope of current PC system capability and game-coding, and some impressive initial grants he got from companies that would never get involved if there weren't some bona fides somewhere.

I suspect the young gentle-person above is merely expressing he is happy not to have suffered through the Amiga and PC DOS period, just like I am happy not to have to wait for the iceman to bring ice for my refrigerator.

I am NOT saying I don't respect the glamor in our own hearts for days gone by, and those Halcyon moments wherein we recall being excited by glowing electrons accomplishing for us, what was then, akin to magic for some.  I recall my own moments of that ancient game Earth 2140 (virtually unknown in The West), but I am not any more interested in going back to it forbearing all of the advances made in other titles or series over the nearly two intervening decades since its release.  :)   Likewise I am painfully aware that our concerns for what could be and would be consumer-available was nothing like our concerns now, and our considerations were far different in that funny place where OS environment, game code, hardware and hardware drivers by third parties come together.

No one was thinking about how we would break up driver access amongst cores to increase CPU capacities to deal with dynamic coding environments, and no one was thinking about games that would be using 10 gigs of combined physical ram in addressable application virtual memory (on interleaved memory channels) when it was a serious upgrade to go from 1M to 2M of video memory!

No, I think the guy probably keeps abreast of what goes on in his world, and is a restless, creative thinker.  Had he not been, he might still have been a great designer with good games to his past credit, but I don't think he would have had those investments (in-kind or otherwise) that he got at his liftoff (and probably, at least potentially based on interest in the kick starter, before).  It is adaptation to what is the frontier now and playing along it that makes him relevant to me, and probably to a lot of others.  That he was doing it in the past is an additional feather, but not what impresses me about what is being done now, nor any guarantee that it was 'bound to happen'.

@Irish

 LMAO!

WC was one of my all time favourite games back in the day, I really enjoyed the detail they put into it.  Freelancer was a great game too, but sorely lacking the FPS component they're focused on in SC.  I REALLY cannot wait to experience their persistent universe first hand!

I'm sad that I'll need to build a huge monster computer though... Well sad as I see the money leave my hand but REALLY happy when the components take its place that is.

I've been really interested in this game since it was announced and kickstarted.. but I was really worried about the cost-of-entry, especially for a game that won't be fully complete for a while (as far as I know). I'll definitely join you guys in TS when I see a couple of you there to ask some questions, as I might be interested in this game. Is there a demo or trial? Or are the videos going to be my only "taste" outside of spending a few dollars?

Thanks!

Gotta pay the man to play, warning it's 40 to 60 GB all downloaded and updated...

Either way, $45 now VS $60 then is a good incentive in it's own right.

They had a free trial Military ship weekend not too long ago too, keep in mind SC is still beta, and as you say will take time.  There is talk that the Persistent Universe may be available (for testing) this year, in 4th quarter.  I'm stoked to see the FPS mechanics.

There is some quirky beta "funk" still in there, but it's a pretty darn solid space flight sim atm, at least in my opinion.
