It looks PS3 owners would be getting a better looking port of Battlefield 3 than Xbox 360 owners will be entitled to. This isn’t because DICE wants to discriminate but because of the fact that the PS3 version of Battlefield 3 will support SPU-based deffered shading whereas the Xbox 360 version will only have tiled-based deferred shading.

DICE cites the reason as being the Xbox 360 not having SPUs, however it appears this will provide a better experience for PS3 owners as it’ll enable them to produce better visuals as having the ability to use the SPU+GPU together “raises the bar.” This also enables to offload some of the SPU’s work to the GPU, providing them with more space to create better looking shaders and environments.

Although, DICE says they’ll be able to use some of 360′s CPU power to offload its GPU’s work to an extent, it still wouldn’t provide them with the same level of freedom that having a dedicated SPU-based deffered system will for the PS3. Here are some slides taken out of their presentation:

The first one confirms that the PS3 version will be using SPU-based deffered system:

<a href="http://i.imgur.com/WWrwA.jpg" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/i.imgur.com');" rel="lightbox[25815]">

The second shows that the Xbox 360 won’t have that feature and will be using a tiled-based deffered system instead:

<a href="http://i.imgur.com/EXw9T.jpg" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/i.imgur.com');" rel="lightbox[25815]">

The final one shows why exactly it’s better to have an SPU-based deffered system:

<a href="http://i.imgur.com/yORRe.jpg" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/i.imgur.com');" rel="lightbox[25815]">

You can view detailed reports of having SPU based deffered shading on the PS3 over at DICE’s official presentation regarding the same<a href="http://www.slideshare.net/DICEStudio/spubased-deferred-shading-in-battlefield-3-for-playstation-3" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.slideshare.net');" target="_blank"> over here. The presentation regarding the Xbox 360′s tiled-based deffered shading can be <a href="http://www.slideshare.net/DICEStudio/five-rendering-ideas-from-battlefield-3-need-for-speed-the-run" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.slideshare.net');" target="_blank">found here (Slides 63-83).

Although, this doesn’t mean for sure that the PS3 version of Battlefield 3 will be the better looking console port of the title, but if DICE’s presentation is to be believed it certainly looks to be that way. Do let us know your thoughts below.

This is just an update to tell you that the PlayStation Network is now live again. with a system update.

Personally It took me like 1/2 an hour, but that was when it was only live on the Eastern Coast..

Quote

We have been working on a new PS3 system software update that requires all PSN users to change their password once PlayStation Network is restored. The update (v3.61) is mandatory and is available now.
If using a PS3, your password can only be changed on your own PS3 (or a PS3 on which your PSN account was activated), as an added layer of security. If you have never downloaded any content using your account on the system, an email will be sent to the registered sign-in ID (email address) associated with your account when you first attempt to sign-in to PSN. This e-mail will contain a link that will enable you to change your password. In this email, click on the link and follow the instructions to change your password. Once you have changed your password you can sign-in to your account using your new password.
We strongly recommend that all PSN account holders with PS3s update their systems to prepare for when PlayStation Network is back online. The release of this update is a critical step as we work to make PlayStation Network significantly more secure. Thank you for your continued support and patience.

PSN Slowly Being Restored

The good news: PlayStation Network is slowly being restored across the country. The bad news: It will take some time and work to re-gain access to your account. Read on for more details.

As of 7:58 Pacific time on Saturday, users in the following states should be able to log back into the PSN: California, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. You can check this page for the most up-to-date network status for your home state.

But before you rush to share your latest creation in LIttle Big Planet, you will need to update your firmware to version 3.61, which is available for download on Sony’s website or on your PS3 when you power it up.

According to a video message by Kazuo Hirai, Sony’s representative CEO and executive deputy president, the services and functionalities being restored in this reboot include:

Sign-in for PSN and Qriocity

Online gameplay for PS3 & PSP

Music Unlimited subscription for PS3 & PC

Third-party Services: Netflix, Hulu, Vudu and MLB TV

Social Functions: Friends list, Chat, Trophy Comparison and PlayStation Home.

The PS Store and purchasing functions in Qriocity are to come in a later relaunch. No time frame was offered.

Now, for the not so fun part. In addition to updating the firmware, all users must also reset their PSN and Qriocity passwords. The new passwords can only be changed on the original PS3 where the login was activated or via a valid email address.

According to Hirai, part of the delay with this relaunch was the implementation of updated security measures like “advanced security technology, increased levels of encryption, additional firewalls and early warning detection systems to warn of any usual activities that can signal an attack on the network.” Although it is reassuring to hear Sony took its time to investigate and apply appropriate security measures to guard against future attacks, did it take this outage to make Sony prioritize the security of its customers’ data? I hope other companies are taking proactive measures now before they too have to face down a cyber attack in the face of irrate customers and lawmakers.

In an effort to regain the trust and goodwill of customers, Sony is “offering [them] an opportunity to enroll, at no cost, in identity theft monitoring programs such as cyber monitoring or insurance in countries where such programs exist.” In addition, Hirai also hinted that a “Welcome Back Package” will be announced in the coming days, but will these measures do the trick to win back customers?

Let us know in the comments whether the PSN is working for you. Do you still trust Sony enough to use the PSN again?

PSN Restoration - Timeline Update

So while we do a lot of PC gaming around here, a bunch of us still have consoles that we use from time to time. If you haven't been paying attention to the time line of the PSN Restoration, here is the latest and possibly shortest message from Patrick Seybold regarding the update.

"I know you all want to know exactly when the services will be restored. At this time, I can’t give you an exact date, as it will likely be at least a few more days. We’re terribly sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we work through this process."
